Which wheelchair is right for me?

Self-propelled, attendant propelled, or electric wheelchair?

A wheelchair - especially electric wheelchair - is often a costly purchase and it is quite easy to choose a model that isn't right for your needs.  Choosing the right one out of hundreds of wheelchairs and thousands of accessories can be a daunting task.
There are three basic types of wheelchairs on the market today designed for different requirements of people with different conditions - self-propelled, attendant propelled, and electric (wheelchairs, scooters, buggies).
Within each category there are many different models and accessories each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
Feel free to call and ask us about any manual and electric wheelchairs you find anywhere!

Self-propelled wheelchairs are propelled by the user and are primarily for daily living and sometime for sport.  Attendant propelled wheelchairs are designed to be pushed solely by someone else.  In general, these wheelchairs are light, easily transportable and easy to maintain.  Electric wheelchairs (including scooters and buggies) are typically used by people with limited upper extremity strength or dexterity or for long distance outdoor use.
You may want to consider buying two different types of wheelchair, each for a different range of activities.  For example, a self-propelled wheelchair for daily living and short distance use and an electric wheelchair for long distance outdoor use.
Ultimate Mobility understands that selecting the right wheelchair will make your everyday life as pain-free and comfortable as possible.  We are here to help you make the right decision.
Tips on wheelchair evaluation and selection
Are you looking for a new wheelchair?
When selecting a wheelchair, it is simply not enough to browse through catalogs, read manufacturers’ specs, or relying on people who “claim to know a lot” about wheelchairs. Find the most experienced and knowledgeable people you can to help you with your evaluation. Each feature and component selection should be discussed with you for your input, and you should be able to get a logical explanation for every option and every configuration recommended.
Resist the temptation to rush to get a new wheelchair. The evaluation, especially if your situation is complex, may take a while. There are hundreds of wheelchairs and thousands of accessories to choose from. There are times when a clinic member may need to seek clinical or technical advice from other people in order to find the right solution for you.
