The Heavy Duty Electric Wheelchair

This group is, as the name implies, built for the higher weight capacity users.  Generally designed for individuals with a weight of 300 lbs and up.  These heavy duty electric wheelchairs are available in many different makes and models offering many of the same features that are found on the standard electric wheelchairs.

The Standard Electric Wheelchair

This group is full of many different wheelchair manufacturers and any one of them will make an excellent choice. This group of electric wheelchairs offer the user a good dual purpose electric wheelchair.  They are ideal indoor electric wheelchairs because of their tight turning radius and overall maneuverability.  Built along the same basic design as the travel electric wheelchairs, but they are much more powerful and rugged.  Outdoors they are capable of handling a more challenging terrain by offering better traction, stability, and power.  With speeds of up to 6.5 mph and an overall range of up to 25 miles these are and excellent choice for the active individual who is in need of an electric power wheelchair.

This class is much heavier than the group mentioned above and therefor harder to transport.  For you to transport one of these electric wheelchairs you would need to have a power lift installed on your vehicle.

Travel Electric Wheelchairs

This group of electric wheelchairs is designed to be compact and portable.  They work very well in smaller spaces like an apartment, at the mall, on a cruise ship, or in a crowded department store.  They are very mobile with speeds up to 4 mph and a driving range of up to 10 miles.

This group of electric wheelchairs can be easily transported because they disassemble into smaller pieces each weighing about 35 lbs or less.  They feature a comfortable seat, but not one designed for fulltime use.  These electric whelchairs also feature flip up armrest for easy transferring into and out of the power wheelchair.

A story about an athlete who overcame physical disabilities

In 1978, Jim Knaub, an accomplished athlete in pole-vaulting was involved in a motorcycle accident.  The accident left him a paraplegic. With his pole-vaulting career behind him, Jim still felt the need for athletic competition. He saw his wheelchair as a vehicle to compete – in wheelchair road racing. Using his experience as an elite athlete and his desire to be at the top of the sport, Jim trained hard and created his own innovative wheelchair designs. This total dedication and determination paid off, and soon Jim raced to his first major win at the Honolulu Marathon.

Jim established himself as one of the top racers in the world by becoming the first two-time winner of the prestigious Boston Marathon in 1982 and 1983 setting World Records both years. Jim won nearly every road race he entered from 1992 to 1995 and held every US, track record from 400 meters to the 5000 meters. In 1984 Jim earned a place on the US Paralympics Team. Jim’s racing career was highlighted by winning the Boston Marathon an unprecedented five times while setting World Records for that distance.

During a racing career that spanned 20 years, Jim also developed a parallel career in the mobility products industry. He earned a reputation as an innovator and industry expert by pushing the design envelope of products for the disabled including sportschairs and lightweight chairs for everyday use.

The Invacare Infinity(TM) Lo Contour AirFlo(TM) features a non-contoured front end for very active users or to accommodate "windswept" deformities. The AirFlo is an excellent choice for those with a history of, or considered to be at very high risk of developing skin breakdown. The postural support layer provides support and stability to the legs, assists in pressure redistribution, and reduces shear due to sliding. The air flotation insert inflates to provide optimal immersion of bony prominences. The user-friendly inflation bulb allows one-handed adjustment of inflation level, while the quick-disconnection system seals the air instantly when detached. Each AirFlo comes with two covers--a moisture-proof, antimicrobial inner cover to protect the foam, and a highly stretchable outer cover provides maximum conformity to user's shape. Which electric scooter is right for me?

3-wheel scooter, 4-wheel scooter, or travel scooter?

Just like other types of mobility products, Scooters present a variety of choices and options designed to fit your lifestyle and pocketbook. The choice between how many wheels you need is directly related to what activities you will be using your scooter for.

A general rule of thumb is a 4 wheel scooter is more stable than a 3 wheel scooter. If you are a very active, “outdoor” person who will use a scooter most of the time then a four wheeler might fit the bill. But, as with other mobility products, there are always compromises to be made when choosing options. For the most part, 3 wheelers are lighter and easier to transport and better for indoor use and for people who will be using a scooter on a part time basis. Travel scooters are lighter and easier to transport, but they often have limited battery life and can be less comfortable.
